MLB video highlights: Yankees best Red Sox, 7-4

After two strong starts to open the year, Saturday wasn’t one of John Lackey’s better efforts as he allowed a career-high four home runs en route to taking his first loss of the year as the Yankees topped the Red Sox 7-4 Saturday afternoon in New York.

Lackey didn’t make it out of the sixth inning as he allowed two runs in each of the first, fourth and sixth innings. Overall, the right-hander went 5 2/3 innings allowing six runs on ten hits, while striking out six. Brian McCann homered twice for the Yankees, while Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Beltran also took Lackey deep. Kelly Johnson hit the fifth Yankees home run of the day in the eighth inning off of reliever Burke Badenhop.

The Red Sox offense is still searching for a spark as they were limited to seven hits in the loss. A.J. Pierzynski was a bright spot for the Sox as he went 2-for-4 with his first homer in a Red Sox uniform in the loss. Mike Carp added a two-RBI single in the seventh for the third and fourth runs.

The teams will conclude their weekend series tomorrow night (8:05, ESPN) which will see Felix Doubront go up against Ivan Nova.

What they’ll be saying: The Red Sox are still searching for a consistent batting order, especially at the top as they had their fourth lead off batter of the season Saturday in Dustin Pedroia, who went 1-for-5. Hitting with runners in scoring position continues to be an issue as they went 1-for-8 in the game and are now batting .190 (19-for-100) on the year … The Yankees certainly made Lackey pay for his mistakes as when he left the ball over the plate it was hammered. Still, Lackey has pitched very well to open the year and should not be a concern. Even though he wasn’t needed, Koji Uehara would not have been available for a second straight day as he is dealing with shoulder soreness.
