Well-rested Phillies host Mets for pair

Perhaps the only thing more unexpected than the Phillies’ 13-12 start over their first 25 games is the Mets’ 14-11 start.

The Phillies have faced some of the best in the majors, (Dodgers, Rangers) as well as some of the worst (Cubs, Diamondbacks), and if nothing else they proved they can play with anyone in the league.

Exactly how good they can be, and for how long has yet to be determined.

But when breaking down the numbers, the Mets don’t appear to be a particularly fear inspiring opponent.

They have just one starting pitcher who ranks higher than the league average in adjusted ERA, and have a bullpen that is only better than the Phillies and Reds, third to last in the league.

The Mets will send Jon Niese and Bartolo Colon to the mound to face Cole Hamels and Kyle Kendrick respectively in a short two-game set.

Following the series, the Phillies will enjoy their second off day in four days prior to hosting the Nationals Friday.

Offensively, the Phillies have shown some of the same clutch hitting that made the 2007-2011 teams so special.

They came back from a four-run deficit to beat the Diamondbacks Saturday, and then backed up A.J. Burnett’s eight inning masterpiece in a 2-0 win Sunday.

Probable starters

The Phillies appear to have a slight edge on the mound against the Mets.

  • Tuesday:  LHP Jon Niese (1-2, 2.45 ERA) vs. LHP Cole Hamels (0-1, 3.00 ERA)
  • Wednesday: RHP Bartolo Colon (2-2, 4.50 ERA) vs. RHP Kyle Kendrick (0-2, 3.52 ERA)
