MLB video highlights: Red Sox top Reds, 4-3 at Fenway Park

For a second straight night the Red Sox had some late inning magic as Wednesday they scored two runs in the eighth inning to come-from behind and beat the Reds 4-3 at Fenway Park completing a two-game sweep. With the win the Red Sox get back to .500 for the first time since the second game of the season after going 0-8 in games attempting to do so before tonight.

With the Sox trailing 3-2 going into the eighth they scored the tying run as well as the eventual game-winning run on just two hits. A.J. Pierzynski’s ground-rule double down the right field line tied the game at three and then after an intentional walk to Jackie Bradley Jr., Will Middlebrooks ripped a single up the middle scoring Grady Sizemore who earlier walked for the eventual game-winning run.

“We give up the lead in that 3-2 situation and we just continue to build the inning. (Manny) Parra gets a big strikeout of David to lead off the inning, Nap draws the walk, Jonny Gomes with another walk, we felt like if we could get Parra out of the game with the left-handers coming we thought we might have a chance and it worked that way,” manager John Farrell said. “Jonny gets a four pitch walk and then A.J., who’s been swinging the bat well, he gets the double inside the line and we continue to move through the line. But Will’s base hit, obviously the difference in this one. It’s good to see him come in at an opportune time.”

Craig Breslow pitched the eighth inning to pick up the win and Koji Uehara came on for the save in the ninth.

Starter Jake Peavy gave the Red Sox what he has all season, a solid start keeping the team in the game. The right-hander went 6+ innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out four. After loading the bases in the sixth with no outs, Chris Capuano allowed an RBI ground out (charged to Peavy) before Burke Badenhop got two ground outs to end the inning without any further damage.

Trailing 2-0 going into the sixth, the Red Sox were able to tie the game on three straight hits. After Jonathan Herrera led the inning off with a single Dustin Pedroia struck out. Shane Victorino then ripped a single off the wall setting up first and third for David Ortiz. Ortiz answered the call by smacking an RBI single to right and the next batter Mike Napoli doubled to right to drive in the tying run at the time. Reds starter Mike Leake pitched well, allowing two runs over seven innings.

The Red Sox are off Thursday before traveling to Texas for a weekend series with the Rangers beginning Friday night.

What they’ll be saying: Another game, another tight one for the Red Sox as they have played in 13 one-run games on the season, the most in the American League and now have a 5-8 record in those games. Although they struggled with runners in scoring position for much of the contest, they got the clutch hits when they needed them late, highlighted by Middlebrooks. Overall, they were 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position … Although Peavy didn’t have his best stuff, or factor into the decision, he did what he’s done to this point in the season which is give the team a chance to win each time he takes to the mound. He remained undefeated against the Reds lifetime, posting a 6-0 record with a 2.33 ERA in 11 career starts.
