Giants’ Stevie Brown will miss season with torn ACL

The Giants have suffered a key injury in their secondary for the third straight preseason.

Safety Stevie Brown was diagnosed with a torn ACL after suffering a noncontact injury in Saturday night’s loss to the Jets. He was placed on injured reserve yesterday and will miss the season.

Brown actually injured himself after intercepting a pass by Geno Smith in the second quarter. His left leg buckled when trying to make a cut during the return. He had to be carried off the field and put no weight on his leg. The Giants initially diagnosed it as a sprain, but the fact it showed up as a torn ACL on the MRI was not surprising.

“It was just something that happened,” head coach Tom Coughlin said. “I feel badly for him. He’s worked hard. He’s prepared himself well and been in a position where he’s made a lot of plays for us. We will definitely miss him.”

The Giants lost cornerback Terrell Thomas to torn ACLs in each of the last two seasons. Thomas has played at cornerback in the preseason, and it’s unlikely he’ll make the move to safety now, but the team does have depth, including veteran Ryan Mundy.

“Ryan will be back there [at safety] and again we’ve got some other people that we definitely want to see,” Coughlin said. “Try to get to the point where Cooper Taylor can play and we can take a good look at him.”

Taylor was the Giants’ fifth-round pick out of Richmond this past NFL Draft. He has been dealing with a hamstring injury in preseason.
