Jets trim roster with cuts of Braylon Edwards, Joe McKnight

The Jets thinned out their roster with 15 roster cuts Tuesday, most notably wide receiver Braylon Edwards, running back Joe McKnight and guard Stephen Peterman.

The cuts come ahead of Tuesday’s deadline when NFL teams need to have their rosters at 75 players.

Signed in late July when the Jets receiving corps was thinned out due to injury and poor play, Edwards was supposed to be a big target wide receiver and a red-zone threat. His third tour of duty with the Jets was plagued by injuries and a limited pitch count from the coaching staff which limited his ability to showcase his talent. Combine that with the impending return of Santonio Holmes to the field and Edwards became expendable.

McKnight was perhaps the most surprising cut among the group of mostly young players. Entering his fourth year in the league, he was among the best kickoff returners in the game and entered the offseason as part of the Jets’ running back rotation.

But off the field concerns, coupled with dehydration and migraines, derailed his training camp.

McKnight suited up Saturday night in the Jets’ preseason win over the Giants but did not play.

After a solid minicamp in June, nine-year veteran Stephen Peterman appeared to have a hold on the starting left guard position. But a poor training camp and two dismal showings to start preseason saw Peterman demoted to the second-team. The team also tried him out at center.

Against the Giants, the oft-maligned Vlad Ducasse started at left guard and rookie Brian Winters was inserted into the game following an injury to Ducasse.
