Source: Mark Sanchez will miss Week 2 against Patriots
It should come as no surprise to anyone but Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will be out for this Thursday’s game at New England, a source tells Metro.
Sanchez suffered a right shoulder injury two weeks ago in the fourth quarter of the Jets’ third preseason game and has not played or practiced since. Multiple reports on Sunday morning have Sanchez going to famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews this week for an evaluation.
Andrews is a renowned orthopedist who famously has done work on a number of NFL stars including quarterbacks Tom Brady and Brett Favre among others.
Rookie quarterback Geno Smith got the start on Sunday for the Jets against the Buccaneers in place of Sanchez. The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, tells Metro that Sanchez “was ahead in the quarterback competition before the injury.”
Throughout last week, head coach Rex Ryan and Sanchez himself referred to the injury as being “day-to-day” and would not put a timetable on a possible return.
“Everything points to Mark not being available this Thursday at the Patriots – and it might easily be a couple more weeks,” the source said. “He hasn’t thrown since the injury and likely won’t anytime this week.”
