The Word: M.I.A. takes on the NFL lawsuit in YouTube post

M.I.A. is not taking the NFL’s $1.5 million lawsuit against her for flipping the bird during last year’s Super Bowl half-time show lightly, calling the suit “completely ridiculous” and “massive corporation d— shaking” in an angry YouTube response. “So now [the NFL is] scapegoating me into figuring out the goal posts on what is offensive in America,” she says.

“They want me on my knees and say sorry so they can slap me on my wrists. And basically say it’s OK for me to promote being sexually exploited as a female than to display female empowerment through being punk rock. That is what it boils down to, and I’m being sued for it.”

The kinder, gentler Grammy-winning singer Bruno Mars was named as the headliner for the halftime show at 2014′s Super Bowl. “It’s just an honor,” Mars said about the high-profile gig when it was announced in September, one in which we doubt no middle fingers will be thrown. “We just got off tour so being able to come to New York City and announce this right now is incredible. We’re celebrating, we’re celebrating for sure.”

Super Bowl XLVIII will be held on February 2 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
