Jets Notebook: Hill, Holmes both likely out against Falcons
The Jets receiving corps looks likely to be depleted Monday night at the Falcons. Both Stephen Hill (concussion) and Santonio Holmes (hamstring) did not practice on Thursday and probably won’t play.
Hill was injured on the second play of the Jets’ opening possession of their Sunday loss at the Titans, when he was hit on an underthrown Geno Smith pass that ended up as an interception. He went straight to the ground and was motionless for several moments before he was helped off the field. He did not return for the game. He has been diagnosed with a concussion.
Hill stretched with teammates on Thursday but wore a baseball cap while doing so. He did not participate in team drills but instead rode the exercise bicycle. When asked if either Holmes or Hill could practice, head coach Rex Ryan was predictably glum in his response.
“You guys figure it out,” Ryan said. “They didn’t practice today.”
Hill did not speak with the media on Thursday due to his concussion symptoms. However, he was in the locker room and talked with teammates.
Even more of a question mark for the Jets is Holmes, who suffered a hamstring in the second half of Sunday’s game. He has not practiced this week and looks likely to miss time beyond the Falcons game.
The injuries to the wide receivers is a huge blow to the offense as Holmes and Hill are the top two wideouts for the Jets in receptions and receiving yards this year.
Jets notes …
» Running back Chris Ivory suffered a hamstring injury two weeks ago in the first half of a Week 3 win over the Bills, but he was back with the team and did positional drills on Thursday.
“I think he’s made progress, again he wasn’t able to really participate in practice,” Ryan said. “But he is making progress.”
» Running back Mike Goodson returned this week from a four-game suspension and the free agent signee could be ready for his Jets debut. Goodson did not participate in training camp or preseason and has yet to play for the Jets.
“He looks pretty good,” Ryan said. “We’ll see how he progresses through the week right now, but he looks pretty good.” Goodson said that he “definitely” expects to be ready and to play on Monday. He is currently on the Active Exempt list so he can practice with the team but if he is to play against the Falcons, the Jets would have to make a corresponding roster move.
» Ryan said that Clyde Gates “with his knee” and Darrin Walls (shoulder) were limited in practice. Walls wore a red noncontact jersey.
“We’re trying to eliminate contact with them,” Ryan said. “That’s the reason he had the red jersey on.”
