Jets safety Josh Bush excited to learn from veteran Ed Reed

Jets safety Ed Reed not only got a contract for the rest of the year with a playoff contender; he also got a new buddy.

Second-year safety Josh Bush approached the future Hall of Famer on Thursday morning before practice, perhaps a bit starstruck as he shook hands with the 11-year veteran safety. Bush, a sixth-round pick last year, has already played in 25 games but his experience pales when compared to Reed’s nine Pro Bowl appearances and 167 games played.

For the relatively young and inexperienced Bush, there is clearly an eagerness to learn from Reed.

“That’s how I introduced myself. I said, ‘Mr. Reed, how you doing? I’m your shadow,’” Bush said. “He said, ‘No doubt,’ like he was all for it. He’s a good guy.”

Reed was signed on Thursday morning after a whirlwind courtship that shocked many in the NFL. While Reed’s relationship with Jets head coach Rex Ryan date back to their time in Baltimore, the move to bring in the veteran happened just days after his release from the Texans.

There is already a benefit for players like Bush and a young Jets secondary that features rookie cornerback Dee Milliner, second-year safety Antonio Allen and third-year safety Jaiquawn Jarrett. Reed knows Ryan’s defense and understands the basic concepts of what the secondary will be called upon to do.

One practice in, Bush already has taken notes on Reed’s approach.

“In one day, he approached the game the right way, like a real veteran would. He came out, practiced just like [Jets safety] Dawan Landry practices, full speed. So just all his credentials and everything – some guys come in, you know, they don’t really give that effort in practice — but he gave that effort and that’s something that I look like,” Bush said. “I mean he’s always on SportsCenter. It’s not like I turned the TV on and tried to find Ed Reed, he’s just on the television so obviously he’s doing something good.”
