Jets re-sign offensive lineman Willie Colon

It wasn’t a splashy move, but the Jets continued an offseason of understated moves on Wednesday with right guard Willie Colon re-signing for a second year with the team.

A team source tells Metro New York the deal is for one-year. It has been reported to be worth $2 million.

Colon started all 16 games for the Jets in 2013 after being signed as a free agent last offseason. Colon was especially invaluable in the locker room where his leadership and veteran presence was an important component of the team’s surprising 8-8 season.

The Jets return four out of five starters from their offensive line from a season ago, with only Austin Howard lost via free agency. In his place, they signed Breno Giacomini who will be expected to anchor the right side of the line along with Colon.

The move to sign Colon comes as no real surprise, especially since he tweeted last Saturday a picture of the Empire State Building lit up in green and wrote, “You think its a sign! LOL #nyjets.”

That was followed with a tweet later that night which showed Colon’s desire to stay a Jet:

The 2014 season will be Colon’s ninth in the league. A native of the Bronx, Colon was a fourth-round pick out of Hofstra in the 2006 NFL Draft.
