Lindros out, Shero in Hockey Hall of Fame

2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic - Alumni Game
He was considered a long shot and, in the end, Eric Lindros wasn’t selected for induction into the 2013 Hockey Hall of Fame class.

On Tuesday, Scott Niedermayer, Chris Chelios, Brendan Shanahan and Geraldine Heaney were voted in as players by the Hall’s 18-member selection committee.

Lindros, a six-time All-Star, was one of the greatest and most polarizing figures in Flyers history. He scored 372 games and 493 assists in 760 games. This was his first year of eligibility. Other notable former Flyers on the ballot included: Rod Brind’Amour, Jeremy Roenick , Brian Propp, Rick Tocchet, John LeClair and Ron Hextall.

Fred Shero, who coached the Flyers to two Stanley Cups (1974, 75) was selected as a member of the Builder’s Category. He was the first coach to win the Cup with an expansion team. Shero died in 1990 after a 10-year coaching career.

“I am thrilled to hear that Fred Shero was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame,” Flyers owner Ed Snider said in a statement. “There’s no sense looking back as to why it didn’t happen sooner, because today’s a happy day to celebrate the fact that a guy that deserves it immensely has finally been elected to the Hall of Fame. It’s a great day for the Philadelphia Flyers.”
