A 59-year-old man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the car he was driving slammed into an off-duty Philadelphia police officer who was riding his motorcycle Sunday.
Louis John Vogwill was charged Monday with involuntary manslaughter, vehicular homicide and homicide by vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance for a crash that killed Officer Lamar Poole, an 18-year veteran of the department.
Poole, who was assigned to the 12th District, died Sunday at Aria-Torresdale Hospital from injuries he sustained from the crash.
Police say both vehicles were crossing Roosevelt in opposite directions when Vogwill made a left turn, pulling in front Poole's motorcycles.
Vogwill left the scene but was followed by a tow-truck driver that witnessed the accident.
Poole's death was the second off-duty crash that killed an officer in August.
