Police release video of Zimmerman from night Martin was shot

Police have released a surveillance video that shows George Zimmerman on the night he fatally shot Trayvon Martin.

As outrage smouldered over the February shooting of the unarmed black teen in a gated Florida neighbourhood, new allegations arose that Martin was the aggressor in a confrontation that ended with his death.

Zimmerman, 28, has stood by his claim that he shot the boy in self-defence while he was patrolling the community, where Martin was staying with his father, as a “neighbourhood watch captain.” Florida’s Stand Your Ground law states that citizens may not be prosecuted for using deadly force in a situation where they feel threatened.

Zimmerman told police he lost track of Martin while following him through the neighbourhood and was walking back to his vehicle when Martin approached him from behind. After an exchange of words, Zimmerman says Martin then punched him in the face before leaping on top of him and slamming his head into the sidewalk.

Zimmerman says he then began crying for help. A voice can be heard crying for help in audio captured from a neighbour’s 911 call before being silenced by a gunshot, but Martin’s parents insist that it’s their son’s voice.

In the surveillance video, there are no visible signs of blood or injuries to Zimmerman’s face or head though some say a closer look at the tape reveals what may be a wound in the back of his head.

Zimmerman has so far not been charged in Martin’s death.
