VIDEO: 13 Pa. students suspended for filming the ‘Harlem Shake’

Thirteen Fayette County students have been suspended for filming a video of the “Harlem Shake,” a video craze inspired by a Baauer-produced heavy bass track. The song this month spawned thousands of amateur-shot YouTube videos that show one lone dancer in a group that seems to be unaware of the music until the bass drops and the entire crowd begins gyrating wildly.

The students at Brownsville Area High School uploaded the video to the social media site earlier this week. All of the participants received two-day suspensions,  WTAE-Pittsburgh reported.

One student’s mother, who felt the punishment was too harsh, told the station that a substitute teacher earlier this week gave students permission to shoot the video during a photography class.

Brownsville School Board president Roy Brashear called the video “very graphic and very vulgar” and said the board stands behind the superintendent’s decision to suspend the students, according to a report from The Tribune-Review.
