Elton John’s 7 greatest glasses in honor of his 70th birthday

Looks like Saturday night’s alright for a birthday what with Elton John turning 70 today.

The musical icon and noted AIDs activist was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, in the Pinner area of London.

He’s since sold more than 300 million albums, including seven that consecutively hit No. 1 on U.S. album charts, had 27 Top 10 singles and his revamped “Candle in the Wind,” released as a dedication to the late Princess Diana in 1997, is the best-selling single in the history of U.S. and U.K. charts.

John also won five Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Tony Award and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Since its inception in 1992, the Elton John AIDS Foundation has raised more than $200 million for HIV programs, treatment and more in 55 countries.

And through it all, John has remained ever the fashionable gent, known for outrageous outfits and an extensive collection of often out-there eyeglasses that surely inspire envy in fellow rocker and glasses aficionado Bono.

So in honor of Sir Elton’s 70th birthday, here are seven of our favorite spectacles he’s worn over the years.
