49ers’ Aldon Smith makes terroristic threats, claims he has bomb

We’ve seen just about every type of arrest in the NFL over the last decade or so — drunk driving, assaults, drugs, shooting yourself and shooting others. And yet, I don’t believe we’ve seen anyone get arrested for claiming they had a bomb at an airport.

That is, until Sunday.

49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested on Sunday at LAX after he said he had a bomb, according to Los Angeles police.

OK, to be fair, that headline and sentence are sort of misleading. Smith was more guilty of being stupid than actually being a terrorist. Police say they pulled Smith aside during screening for a flight after he got into an argument with the TSA attendant. When they pulled him out of the line, he made the claim he had a bomb, police said.

And, to make it worse, he got into an altercation with police at the gate as he tried to leave the area.

Here’s a tip for Smith: Don’t joke about having a bomb at an airport, especially when you are already in an agitated state.

Smith was taken into custody, but he posted $20,000 in bail and was not kept in jail.

But he might be back in jail pretty soon. Smith is already facing charges from two different incidents in 2012. He was arrested for DUI — for a second time as an NFL player — in January 2012. And then he was taken into custody after he was found to be in possession of an illegal assault weapon after someone was shot at a party at his home in June 2012. Smith didn’t fire the shots — and was actually stabbed in the fight — but was charged with inciting the melee.

Talk about a mess.
