Audio: U.S. soccer star Clint Dempsey releases new rap / hip-hop song

When hip-hop artists spit about “green,” it typically means money or pot. Not the case when it comes to U.S. soccer star Clint Dempsey, who is set to release a new rap album titled, “The Redux,” after the World Cup. When Dempsey talks “green” in the first single off the album, called “It’s Poppin’,” (listen above), he’s talking about grass – as in grass on a field … as in grass on a soccer field.

Typically, when you rap about a profession that doesn’t primarily involve drugs or sex, it fails miserably. Few want to hear a doctor throw down about colonoscopies or a school teacher bark about parent-teacher conferences. And most people don’t want to hear Clint Dempsey rap about a sick header (although his street cred definitely got a bump from that bloody nose against Ghana).

This isn’t Dempsey’s first rodeo in a DJ Skee booth, of course. In the mid-2000s, he released this:

“We were dos keeeeeds!”
