Liddicoat and Griffin had been engaged for almost three years. No rush.
What was it about this weekend that made superstar athletes get hitched?
Washington Redskins quarterback/phenom Robert Griffin III just about had his wedding live tweeted by those in attendance, while new Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley kept his marriage this weekend a little more on the down low (can I still say that or is that totally out-of-style?), but not off Twitter either.
There was also big news from the NBA side of relationships, as Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant got engaged to his girlfriend, WNBA star Monica Wright of the Minnesota Lynx. (By the way, is there a cooler set of team nicknames than the Lynx and the Minnesota Timberwolves? How did the University of Minnesota end up with the Golden Gophers? Embarrassing.)
Griffin III was married Saturday in Denver, Colo. to college sweetheart Rebecca Liddicoat. If you’re wondering why Denver, Boulder, Colo. is her hometown, so it’s nice to see Griffin III already has his priorities in order. The two met in March 2009 when Griffin III was a freshman and he proposed in fall 2010.
This story from Baylor’s alumni magazine, includes a fantastic quote about their first meeting:
“When I first met him, I thought he was a little weird,” Liddicoat said. “I was a little nervous, and I asked him why he was wearing girls socks.”
Ah, love at first sight.

As for Barkley, well he also married his college sweetheart, Brittany Langdon. Barkley tweeted on Sunday he was ready for the big day and while there were no wedding pictures like Griffin, here’s a photo of Langdon from USC graduation last month courtesy of Barkley’s Twitter account.

As you can see, star quarterbacks do pretty well for themselves in the dating arena.
Former NBA MVPs do pretty well for themselves also. Durant pulled the dual-athlete marriage and instantly passed Candace Parker and Shelden Williams as the most talented NBA-WNBA duo on Earth. Shelden, you’re really weighing Candace down.
Durant and Wright actually met even before college when both were McDonald’s All-Americans in 2006. Durant, a native of the capital region (Baltimore) went to Texas for college, while Wright, the Texas native (San Antonio) went to the capital region (Virginia) for college. The 5-foot-10 Wright was selected No. 2 overall (just like Durant) in the 2010 draft.
