Braylon Edwards could be ready to play Monday

The return of wide receiver Braylon Edwards might happen as early as this Monday, despite concerns over an injured hamstring.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan signaled confidence that Edwards can be available for the Week 15 game at Tennesee. On Wednesday, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told the Seattle media that concerns over a hamstring injury led to the release of Edwards. The injury, according to Carroll, could shelve the player for the rest of the regular season.

“We thought he had a three-week injury or so and it’d be a while till he gets back,” Carroll said.

The Jets claimed Edwards, who played nearly two full seasons with the Jets in 2009 and 2010, off waivers on Tuesday and their prognosis is nearly as glum.

“Braylon passed the physical; he’s been cleared to practice. I’m optimistic he’ll be ready to play on Monday, but again I’ll lean on our trainers and doctor,” Ryan said. “He is extremely happy to be here. He’s hugging guys; he’s going crazy.”

The move for Edwards comes with risk. Not only is he currently battling a hamstring injury, earlier this season the veteran wide receiver had a knee injury that caused him to miss time.

Ryan also played down the comment from Edwards on Twitter calling Jets management “idiots,” saying he’s heard worse from players in a locker room.

“I was happy to see him despite the obvious comment,” Ryan said. “With the comment, I look at it this way, Mike [Tannenbaum] and I both are doing this, ‘Oh he’s talking to you. Oh he’s talking to you.’ We’re both OK with it.”

On Thursday, Edwards was officially listed as “limited” for practice. He did individual work with receivers coach Sanjay Lal and ran some routes with Sanchez and Tim Tebow throwing to him. Like his head coach, Edwards sounded optimistic on his playing this week.

Edwards said his hamstring “felt OK” following practice and he differed with his former head coach’s prognosis.

“I don’t think Pete has his M.D. I’m just joking. But that’s what they thought; that’s his opinion. Everyone is entitled to theirs,” Edwards said. “The Jets have a different opinion and so we’re kind of moving based off of our doctors not on our coach or myself.”
