Chargers go after Freeney, Pats still in mix?

Despite not having signed with an NFL team yet, free agent defensive end Dwight Freeney is in high demand. San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy went so far as to say his team would change its defensive scheme to better suit Freeney if the Chargers can sign him.

The Patriots brought Freeney and fellow veteran defensive end John Abraham in for workouts in March but did not elect to sign either former All-Pro.

Freeney’s father, Hugh, said he wants his son to play for the Patriots but that another member of the Freeney family would be less than enthused.

“I would love for him to play for the Patriots,” Hugh Freeney told Adam Schein on Sirius XM Radio. “But his mom is really, really against that city. The verbal abuse when she went to the game … they treated her badly. She didn’t want to go back.
