La Salle reaches contract extension with Giannini

Dr. John Giannini had been linked to numerous big-time openings after taking La Salle on a Cinderella ride through the NCAA Tournament. All those suitors will have to wait.

Giannini signed a multi-year contract extension Thursday to remain the head basketball coach for the Explorers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“This past season was an outstanding one for our men’s basketball team, reaching the Sweet 16 and ending the season with a national ranking,” said Dr. Tom Brennan, La Salle director of athletics. “More importantly, Dr. John has built a program on and off the court that gives everyone associated with La Salle great pride.”

The Exlporers closed the season ranked No. 24 in the final USA Today/Coaches Poll. Their 24 wins were the seventh-most in school history and the best since 1990. Giannini’s squad won 21 games in 2011-12.

“I am honored to coach at La Salle,” Giannini said in a statement. “Brother President McGinniss and Dr. Brennan have given me a great opportunity and tremendous support. I am deeply invested in our program and student-athletes. Our program is forming a pattern of consistent success on and off the court that we are eager to build on.”
