Eagles release first depth chart

The Eagles finally have a depth chart and it might surprise quite a few fans that have been watching practice.

First, there is no starting quarterback named. Under the first-team offense, the chart lists “Michael Vick/Nick Foles.” Matt Barkley is with the second string. At Monday’s practice, which was opened to the public, Vick got the first shot with the ones and immediately led a five-play scoring drive. Foles didn’t look bad, either. He hit a DeSean Jackson on a touchdown in the back of the end zone.

To this reporter, Vick has looked a lot more polished over the last few days. He’s making smarter decisions, throwing crisper passes on short routes and showcasing his arm on the deep throws. Personally, I think Vick starts Friday against New England and eventually wins the starting job.

Interestingly, excused wide receiver Riley Cooper is still listed as the starting wideout opposite Jackson. Damaris Johnson has been getting the first-team reps since Cooper took his leave of absence last week. Arrelious Benn, the other leading candidate to replace Cooper, is listed with the fourth-team offense. Click here for the entire depth chart.

Brent Celek and James Casey are listed as the starting tight ends, as the Eagles will go without a fullback. LeSean McCoy is the tailback. The starting offensive line features Jason Peters (LT), Evan Mathis (LG), Jason Kelce (C), Todd Herremans (RG), Lane Johnson (RT).

The defense is a 3-4 base, with Cedric Thornton and Fletcher Cox anchoring the ends. Isaac Sopoaga is the nose tackle. The first-team linebackers are Connor Barwin, DeMeco Ryans, Mychal Kendricks and Trent Cole. Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams are the starting cornerbacks, while Nate Allen and Patrick Chung get the nods at the safety positions.

The Eagles will open the preseason Friday night against New England at the Linc. The two teams will take part in joint practices Tuesday and Wednesday.
