Flyers notebook: Vincent Lecavalier will retire, 2016-17 schedule unveiled

The Flyers, who traded Vincent Lecavalier to the Kings in order to open up some cap space (and move on from an aging former superstar) just got $2.25 million they didn’t think they’d have.

Lecavalier, according to NHL sources, will retire at age 36. The Flyers planned to split his $4.5 million cap hit with Los Angeles, but his retirement obviously relieves both teams of the financial burden.

At his best in Tampa Bay, Lecavalier was a 13-time 20 goal scorer (just one of these coming in Philly in 2013-14). He scored 108 points in 2005-06 and won the 2004 Stanley Cup Championship with the Lightning.

Flyers open season in Los Angeles

The Flyers have their slate of 82 games for the 2016-17 season and will kick things off against the Kings in L.A. on Oct. 14.

Their first game against rivals (and Stanley Cup champs) Pittsburgh will be at home on Oct. 29.

Philly will wrap things up with games against the Rangers and Devils on the road on April 2 and 4, before two games at home against Columbus and Carolina on back-to-back days (April 8 and 9).
