The seat under Jets head coach Rex Ryan is becoming uncontrollably hot.
Even on a day when Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning looked uncharacteristically human, the Jets were unable to move the ball for much of the 31-17 loss.
“One thing I know about this team, we’re going to come back next with the same intensity we had the first week of the season, the same intensity we had this week,” quarterback Geno Smith said. “We have 20 weeks to go out there and play football. This is our job.”
Four of the Jets’ first seven games, including Thursday night at the Patriots, were against playoff teams from last season. Two more, Detroit and Chicago, could be playoff teams this year.
“We knew it was going to be a tough test for us,” rookie first-round pick Calvin Pryor said. “But anytime you’re that close, especially against a good football team, we feel like we had the upper hand on them today. It’s very tough, but now all our focus goes onto Tom Brady and the Patriots.”
The Jets began the season with playoff expectations, despite knowing they were in for a tough start to the season. But no one on the Jets expected such a tough go so far.
“No one can [expect this], that’s the reason why we play the games,” Smith said. “When you go into the season, everyone has high expectations and obviously we fell short of our expectations. But we have games ahead of us that we’ve got to come out and play. That should be enough for everybody to get ready for this week.”
