Ed Reed wants Rex Ryan to return to the Jets as their head coach next year. It remains to be seen if the safety or the head coach lasts with the team beyond this season.

Ryan and Reed date back to a successful relationship with the Ravens where Reed blossomed as a safety in a defense where Ryan was coordinator. That same success hasn’t carried over to the Jets, where the pass defense is No. 26 in the league this year.

Reed lashed out at the media on Friday for what he saw as unfair coverage of the secondary.

“Even reading your blogs, listening to your comments [and] knowing half of you don’t know as much about football as you think, unless you sit in the film room with us, break film down or even know the schematic part of it,” Reed said. “You ask the questions, but that doesn’t mean you’re an expert at what we do. It’s funny to me reading it. I smile at it, laugh at it, but that’s your job. Some of your jobs, you take it and try to tear people down.”

But when asked if he wanted to return to the Jets he admitted that if Ryan was fired, he might not be so tempted to don green and white again.

“Probably, because it’s his scheme that stays,” Reed said. “I don’t see why he shouldn’t be [back]; [he is a] great coach. There’s not much more I can say more than that.”

This is the third straight season the Jets have failed to make the postseason.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Ryan’s future with the Jets and his apparent row with the media, Reed would like to return to New York next year. Cut by the Texans in midseason, he signed with the Jets immediately afterward based in large part to his relationship with Ryan.

He came to the area from Houston with a bag full of clothes and “two pairs of jeans and a shirt.”

“Yes, yes I would. I wouldn’t mind staying here. I know the coaches, I know the scheme, building the trust I have built with these players,” Reed said. “The relationships I’ve built with these players these last few weeks has been awesome. That’s a question that will be answered, I’m sure, in the offseason. I’m sure there are a lot of things that they are looking at right now.”
