Jets sign Plaxico Burress

Plaxico Burress is coming back to New York … but not to play for the Giants.

The Jets and Burress agreed to a one-year contract early this morning. The deal is reportedly for just over $3 million and is fully guaranteed, according to ESPN.

Burress had been negotiating with both the Giants and Steelers in the last few days, including meeting with both Giants head coach Tom Coughlin and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. But it was the Jets who swooped in to make the splash after they lost out on the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes to the Eagles.

The Jets re-signed wide receiver Santonio Holmes to a five-year, $50 million contract last week, but announced on Friday they would not be re-signing wideout Braylon Edwards. That opened the door to signing Burress.

Burress comes with a much smaller price tag than Edwards was requesting.

Burress, of course, was released from prison earlier this summer after serving an almost two-year sentence for illegal gun possession. Burress had accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a club in New York City.
