Irsay: Lack of rings led to Manning’s exit

Peyton Manning Denver Broncos Colts owner Jim Irsay said part of the reason he cut ties with Peyton Manning was due to a lack of Super Bowl rings.

Colts owner under fire for comments

Speaking honestly and openly is never a good thing in the sports world.

Colts owner Jim Irsay recently gave a candid interview to USA Today, telling the newspaper that he was frustrated the team only won one Super Bowl with Peyton Manning at the helm. The result was the decision to cut ties with Manning and draft Andrew Luck.

“[Tom] Brady never had consistent numbers, but he has three of these [pointing at his lone Super Bowl ring],” Irsay told USA Today. “Pittsburgh had two, the Giants had two, Baltimore had two and we had one. That leaves you frustrated.

“You make the playoffs 11 times, and you’re out in the first round seven out of 11 times. You love to have the Star Wars numbers from Peyton and Marvin [Harrison] and Reggie [Wayne]. Mostly, you love this [pointing at the ring].”

Irsay’s comments came just five days before the Colts take on Manning’s new team, the Denver Broncos, in Indianapolis.
