Jonny Lee Miller to play Sherlock Holmes in CBS pilot ‘Elementary’

Who’s the hottest detective in Hollywood? The answer is elementary, my dear reader.

Riding on the 19th century coattails of Robert Downey Jr. on the big screen and Benedict Cumberbatch on PBS, Jonny Lee Miller is now set to play Sherlock Holmes in a new TV pilot for CBS.

The former “Eli Stone” star will headline “Elementary,” a drama based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character, reports Deadline.com. Rather than keep Holmes in a historical context a la Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes” film franchise, CBS is transporting the crime-solver to modern times, just as the PBS miniseries “Sherlock” has. (It’s a smart tactic — the Cumberbatch-led miniseries, a coproduction with the BBC that is currently airing in Britain, is a certified hit.) The twist: Miller’s detective will be solving crimes in New York City.
