With four undefeated teams — not to mention potentially worthy one-loss teams in LSU and
Wisconsin — at the top of the BCS rankings, this year’s college football postseason is shaping up to be a mess.
Here’s the nuts and bolts for the unbeatens — Oregon, Auburn, TCU and Boise State — hoping for a national championship game berth.
Naturally, all their chances are not created equal.
1. Oregon (10-0)
The Ducks make the BCS game with two wins, but it’s no easy road. Arizona beat
No. 9 Iowa this year, and the “Civil War” finale against Oregon State is an anything-goes rivalry squabble.
2. Auburn (11-0)
Same deal, tougher games. The Tigers have the Iron Bowl vs. No. 10 Alabama, then the SEC title game against No. 22 South Carolina. Our guess??Auburn won’t be No. 2 (or No. 1, for that
matter) next Tuesday.
Now’s when it gets weird. The Horned Frogs can potentially win out and not get in ... even if Oregon or Auburn falls. A weak showing Saturday has them fading fast in the human polls.
4. Boise St. (9-0)
But is the Broncos’ voting rise enough to overcome TCU’s apparent advantage in the computer rankings? At this point, BSU needs to blow out its last three foes — especially No. 19
Nevada — and pray.
