The MLS held a Landon Donovan tribute ceremony preceding the 2015 MLS SuperDraft which announced the leagues plans to rename its MVP trophy after the great Donovan. Donovan retired in December after helping the LA Galaxy win their fourth MLS Cup as a member of the club. He left MLS soccer as the all-time leading goals (144) and assists (136) leader.

“It was a no-brainer for us to name this award after Landon,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “He’s our Michael Jordan, he’s our Wayne Gretzky, he’s our [Derek] Jeter. Without Landon there’s no MLS the way it is today.”

Donovan made it clear how proud he was by the decision made by the league. He was moved to tears during the video tribute which was aired before they announced their plans to name the award after him.

“I’m incredibly honored [by this award],” said Donovan. “I will try to live my life in a way that is representative of having an MVP trophy named after you.”
