NBA Deadline dissection

NBA trade deadline passes with plenty of last-minute action.

WINNERS

Oklahoma City Thunder
The deal:
» Shipped forward Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic to Boston for center Kendrick Perkins.
» Also acquired center Nazr Mohammed from Charlotte for forwards Morris Peterson and D.J. White.
Impact:
» Green can score in bunches but he may have left OKC?this summer anyhow.
» Perkins adds a big body to an undersized team that desperately needed length and veteran toughness.

Charlotte Bobcats
The deal
:
» Traded their last original member, forward Gerald Wallace, to Portland for two first-round picks.
» Also acquired expiring contracts of Joel Przybilla and Dante Cunningham.
Impact:
» Wallace is an all-world athlete, just not a centerpiece.
» Charlotte freed up a ton of cap space to build through the draft and make a play for a big free agent splash in 2012.

New Jersey Nets
The deal
:
» Sent Derrick Favors, Devin Harris and two first-round picks for Deron Williams.
» Also picked up center Dan Gadzuric and Brandan Wright from Golden State for Troy Murphy.
Impact:
» If Williams can make Brook Lopez a star and NJ adds a scorer this summer, it could be a nice setup to lure Dwight Howard in 2012.
» Wright is an undervalued PF, who has huge upside.

LOSERS

O.J. Mayo
The deal
:
» The No. 3 overall pick in the 2008 draft was on his way to Indiana for forward Josh McRoberts and a 2011 first-rounder, but the deal fell through, perhaps because it wasn’t submitted in time.
Impact:
» This would have been a much-needed fresh start for the troubled shooting guard, who has fought teammates and served a 10-game suspension for violating the anti-drug policy.

Shane Battier
The deal
:
» Houston shipped point guard Aaron Brooks to Phoenix and Battier to Memphis in separate deals. It received guard Goran Dragic and center Hasheem Thabeet.
Impact:
» A class guy and an all-world hustler, Battier figured to go to a title contender looking for that missing piece.
» A shame the best defender on Kobe Bryant has never been part of a true contender.

Dallas Mavericks
The deal
:
» GM Donnie Nelson said he didn’t want to ruin the chemistry of a team that’s won 14 of 15.
» The Mavs failed to find a buyer for Caron Butler and his expiring $10.6 million contract.
Impact:
» Dallas could have really gained ground on LA and San Antonio, who both stayed idle as well.
» This team is still built for the regular season. Tayshaun Prince could have really helped this spring.

Boston Celtics
The deal
:
» Players such as Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett are reportedly “very angry”?with the Perkins deal.
» Also traded rookie center Semih Erden and forward Luke Harangody.
Impact:
» The Celtics just gave away the one huge advantage they had over the Magic and Heat — size up front.
» Cripples what is likely the last title run for Boston’s Big Three.
