No deal: Cards, Pujols can’t agree by superstar’s deadline

Theo Epstein, Brian Cashman, Ruben Amaro Jr. and the rest of baseball’s “haves” had a very good day yesterday.

At the expense of the St. Louis Cardinals, one of those GMs could be adding a very big expense in 10 months or so.

Talks between superstar first baseman Albert Pujols and the Cards broke down yesterday, making it likely the future Hall of Famer will end up on the free-agent market next winter.

ESPN.com reported that St. Louis has offered Pujols a deal that would place him between sixth and 10th in baseball in average annual salary. That apparently wasn’t enough for Pujols — numbers bigger than Alex Rodriguez’s record $275 million, 10-year deal have been speculated.
