Patriots: Names available in free agency, draft

Former Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney is still on the market. Former Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney is still on the market.

The NFL is the league that never sleeps and the month of April has become one of the busiest months on the league calendar. Second and third tier free agents are seeking jobs and, of course, the draft (April 25-27) closes out the month.

Beyond the Wes Welker non-signing and the Danny Amendola acquisition, the Patriots have rarely made the A slot on NFL Network telecasts. This does not mean they haven’t been busy.

The most activity has been on the defensive side of the ball with Adrian Wilson, Aqib Talib, Kyle Arrington and Marquice Cole all signing on to be a part of the Pats’ defensive backfield in 2013. Safety Patrick Chung is now in Philadelphia.

The Pats agreed to a deal with Raiders free agent defensive tackle Tommy Kelly this week while defensive lineman Ron Brace is now in Washington and defensive end Trevor Scott remains on the free agent market.

There are still strong players available in free agency, including offensive linemen Andre Smith, Brandon Moore and Eric Winston as well as defensive talents in Dwight Freeney, Richard Seymour, James Harrison, John Abraham, Sedrick Ellis and Charles Woodson.

As for the upcoming draft, most mocks have the Patriots looking to upgrade on the defensive side of the ball in the first round (29th overall selection). CBSSports.com has the Pats targeting Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant, Purdue defensive tackle Kawann Short and Boise State corner Jamar Taylor. NFL.com has the Pats looking at Southern Methodist defensive end Margus Hunt and LSU free safety Eric Reid.
