Phil Mickelson is back at the center of the golf world after nearly becoming the second oldest British Open Champion two weeks ago at Royal Troon.

He was, of course, bested by Henrik Stenson despite shooting a masterful final round 65 (a bogey free round) and robbed of his sixth major title and accumulating his 11th second-place finish.

In 2005 he won the PGA Championship at Baltusrol the site of the 2016 event. After a fantastic showing across the pond and back at a course he has shown he can contend with, the timing may be perfect for Mickelson. At 46-years-old, as he told golf.com, he still believes he has a few majors left in him.

“I don’t believe that there is a small window,” he said. “I think there’s a really big window of opportunity to add to my resumé, to continue to compete in big events, for the simple reason that the feel and sensitivity of hitting shots, the ability to play golf courses a certain way, to visualize, to make birdies, to pull shots off, that has not diminished.”

Mickelson is still not the favorite in North Jersey at the fourth major of the year, which kicks off Thursday. That designation of course belongs to Dustin Johnson, whose4-under-par score at Oakmontlast month was enough to secure the U.S. Open. The same 4-under score that Mickelson won with in 2005.

Other favorites in the event include Sergio Garcia, who has yet to win a major title, Jason Day, and Rory Mcilroy.

Many casual golf fans will notice that the event is taking place a bit early this year, and that is due to the inclusion of golf in the Olympics — which takes place during the PGA Championship’s usual spot on the golf calendar.

Coverage will be on TNT and and CBS.
