Rangers give up ground

Sabres 3, Rangers 2

What went wrong …

1 Buffalo’s best — Tomas Vanek was merely dominant last night, even without recording a point. Buffalo’s franchise forward spent the evening camped in front of Henrik Lundqvist, which allowed his teammates time and space to make plays. Newly acquired Brad Boyes did just that, tallying a power-play goal to put the Sabres up 2-0 late in the second.

2 Miller time — As good as Vanek was, Ryan Miller was even better. The reason Buffalo closed to within three points of the seventh-place Rangers was Miller’s spectacular rhythm-gymnastics-on-ice, particularly in the third period when his defensemen were non-existent.

3 Slipping —Right now, it appears that the Rangers are a frustrated group. That’s what happens when a team has not won three in a row since early January and fails to generate a 60-minute offensive attack.
