In pro sports, it’s entirely unique to the baseball closer: the entrance theme.
Red Sox pitcher Andrew Bailey seems to have found his theme in Boston and it’s an all too familiar ditty: “Shipping up to Boston” by The Dropkick Murphys. Jonathan Papelbon, now with Philadelphia, used the theme for years during his time as the Sox closer.
Bailey used the song at Fenway Park for the first time on Saturday, in tribute to the city of Boston following last Monday’s Marathon bombings.
“That was something (Jarrod Saltalamacchia) and I discussed,” Bailey told MassLive.com last Saturday. “I said ‘Let’s do it.’ That ninth inning was a part of the game that the fans really enjoyed for a long time, and I don’t know, it was just something that we decided to do. The way that they erupted was unbelievable.
“We’ll see, we’ll see what happens,” he said regarding whether or not he would use the song again. “I haven’t made that decision. We may. That was just for today and then we’ll see what happens.”
On Monday against the A’s, Bailey again entered to the song made famous in the 2006 film “The Departed.”
