Just when you thought the end of the Red Sox’s 2011 regular season couldn’t get any more tense, it did.
Boston split a day-night doubleheader with the Yankees yesterday, and a
Rays win against Toronto pulled Tampa Bay within one game in the chase
for the AL’s fourth playoff spot.
The Sox’s magic number to clinch a playoff berth is now three. They
still control their own destiny:?If they win out in the regular season,
the Rays cannot catch them. But if they lose once, all bets are off.
Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-out, three-run homer off Scott Proctor in the
top of the 14th inning last night to give the Red Sox a 7-4 lead. Felix
Doubront preserved the win with a 1-2-3 save.
