Although it wasn't perfect, the Red Sox beat the Blue Jays 3-1 Thursday night in Toronto, taking two of three from the Blue Jays in the process. The win improves their record to 20-8 and 9-3 on the road, both best in the majors.

Offensively the Red Sox finished with just six hits, leaving plenty of runs on the board as they left 12 runners on base and were 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. They got two runs in the second -- the first on an RBI single from Mike Carp and then a sacrifice fly off the bat of Stephen Drew. Jacoby Ellsbury's single in the sixth inning plated the third run of the night.

Although Ryan Dempster didn't have his best stuff, he pitched well enough to get the win, improving to 2-2 on the year. Dempster went six innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out a season-low four. The only run he allowed was a lead-off home run to Brett Lawrie in the first. Andrew Miller (1/3 inning), Junichi Tazawa (2/3 inning) and Koji Uehara (1 inning) combined to pitch the seventh and the eighth before Joel Hanrahan came on for the save in the ninth.

The Red Sox will travel to Texas for a weekend series with the Rangers beginning Friday night (8:05, NESN). Left-hander Felix Doubront will get the call for the Sox and be opposed by Derek Holland.

What they'll be saying: Dempster didn't have his best stuff of the year, but he did battle and got himself out of a few jams, which was a good sign going forward. He's pitched a lot better than his 2-2 record would indicate and has proven himself as the No. 3 starter in the Sox rotation ... Offensively the Red Sox worked 10 walks on the night, but didn't do much with it, scoring just three runs and going 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Dustin Pedroia left six men on base, while Will Middlebrooks left five ... It was a bit unusual to see Hanrahan close the game and not Andrew Bailey, but it was revealed after the game Bailey was dealing with bicep soreness and that was the reason why he did not pitch.
