The Red Sox traded lefty reliever Franklin Morales to the Colorado Rockies Wednesday in exchange for utility infielder Jonathan Herrera.
Herrera figures to be insurance for the Red Sox should the team not be able to re-sign shortstop Stephen Drew.
The 29-year-old Herrera hit .292 with a .701 OPS in 81 games played last season with the Rockies. The Venezuelan infielder has played over 100 games in a season once, in 2011, when he hit .242. He is not known for his power as he has just eight career home runs.
The 27-year-old Morales began his career with the Rockies.
