Former NASCAR driver Dick Trickle died Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to multiple reports.
The 71-year-old Trickle was found dead in a cemetery Thursday afternoon and had notified authorities that he was about to commit suicide.
The Lincoln County (N.C.) Communications Center said it received a call, apparently from the victim, that said: “There would be a dead body and it would be his.”
Trickle was reportedly found lying near his pickup truck.
Trickle gained notoriety in the late 1980s and through the 1990s due to his unique name and the fact that he often used to smoke cigarettes while driving his race car.
