Wide receiver Victor Cruz had little choice but to return to the Giants in 2013. But now, according to reports, he will be in New York much longer.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports the Giants and Cruz will come to an agreement on a long-term deal before the start of training camp. Camp officially opens on July 26.
Cruz, a restricted free agent, was placed with a first-round tender earlier this offseason meaning a team would have to give up their top pick to sign the receiver. None did, so Cruz reluctantly signed his one-year, $2.879 million tender last month. He was still negotiating a long-term contract throughout the offseason.
Cruz did not report to any of the team’s organized team activities or the mandatory minicamp last month. Since he had yet to sign his deal, he could not be fined for the absences.
The 26-year-old wideout is coming off a Pro Bowl season in 2012. He had 86 catches for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns. Cruz was undrafted out of UMass, but broke out in his rookie season in 2011 as a star in the league. He had 82 catches for 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns that year.
Cruz sent out a cryptic tweet from his verified account on Monday night, which seemed to indicate he had finally locked up the long-term contract.
