Sixers owner Josh Harris and CEO Adam Aron have never been shy about reaching out to franchise icons. Last May, Julius Erving returned to the fold as a strategic adviser. Now, the duo is trying to lure Allen Iverson back.
Iverson, who reportedly turned down an invitation to play for the Mavericks’ D-league team, the Texas Legend, was in town Wednesday to meet with Harris and Aron about a possible position with the Sixers. Nothing has been announced yet.
“Once he does do that, I want to ensure that Josh Harris and Adam Aron know how much Allen appreciates what Philadelphia has meant to him, what the NBA has meant to him,” said Gary Moore, Iverson’s manager, in an interview with The Associated Press. “and to someday come back and be a consultant to them, to help them do certain things.”
Moore also denied a previous report claiming that the 37-year-old Iverson is broke. Iverson has repeatedly said that he wishes to return to the NBA, but no teams have come calling. On Wednesday, Iverson lamented his early departure from the Association on Twitter.
“I realize my actions contributed to my early departure from the NBA,” Iverson wrote. “Should God provide me another opportunity I will give it my all.”
