The Live Feed: Poor, poor Chris Jones

How the Patriots’ 30-27 loss to Jets played out in real time Sunday:

1:00-Rob Gronkowski is back, wearing a huge black brace (J.J. Watt would be proud) on his left forearm.

1:04-Patriots secondary is off to a rousing start as they allow a 25-yard catch to Jeff Cumberland on the first play of the game. Linebacker Dont’a Hightower couldn’t keep up with him.

1:09-Jeremy Kerley picks up his second first down of this opening drive with a catch and run.

1:11-Patriots defense looks lost without Jerod Mayo and Aqib Talib. Kerley catches an 12-yard touchdown pass from Geno Smith; Kyle Arrington was nowhere near him. Way too easy, 7-0 Jets.

1:18-Welcome back Gronk, 12-yard catch and he took a reasonably big hit from a few Jets on the play. That’s his first catch since Week 17 last season.

1:22-30-yard catch for Gronkowski down the middle, he reached the 2-yard line before he was tackled. It’s safe to say Hooman is long forgotten by now … sorry Matthew Mulligan and Zach Sudfeld.

1:23-Pats go hurryup and Brandon Bolden walks in for a 1-yard touchdown (his first of the season). 7-7.

1:29-25-yard catch by David Nelson, what the hell?

1:32-Another 3rd down conversion for the Jets, 16-yard catch by Nelson. Pats defense can’t do anything, no pressure and they’re getting shredded on runs up the middle.

1:34-Haha just as I say that, Smith throws an awful 80-yard pick-6 to fellow rookie Logan Ryan. 14-7 Patriots on the 11th interception thrown by Smith in his first seven games. Nelson was completely jammed by Ryan but Smith still forced it in there, rookie QBs!

1:40-Chandler Jones sacks Smith for a 9-yard loss on the last play of the 1st quarter, Patriots lead Jets 14-7.

1:43-Yuck, Kerley makes a 22-yard catch on the first play of the second quarter.

1:44-Patriots can’t stop Kerley, I mean really?

1:47-Jets settle for a 37-yard field goal by Nick Folk after a holding penalty.

1:57-3rd and 1, Brandon Spikes stuffs Chris Ivory for no gain so Jets are forced to punt.

1:58-Wow, 38-yard punt return by Julian Edelman. Great return, he made a bunch of moves to find daylight.

2:01-4th and 1, Stevan Ridley gets 2 yards on only his second carry of the half.

2:04-I can’t remember the Hooman drawing any holding penalties like Gronk just did near the goal-line.

2:05-17-yard touchdown run for the well-rested Ridley, 21-10 Patriots.

2:16-Brady had Gronkowski open on a deep throw but Antonio Allen knocked it away before it could get to him. If completed, it probably would have been a TD.

2:18-A 6-yard sack by Chris Jones, Chandler’s brother from another mother.

2:22-Rookie safety Duron Harmon (big day for Rutgers guys) makes maybe his first play of the season: deflecting a long pass intended for Stephen Hill.

2:27-Calvin Pace and Sheldon Richardson combine for a sack on Brady on 3rd down, he fumbled the ball but Sebastian Vollmer recovered it.

2:30-Ugly end of the first half but the Patriots comfortably lead the Jets 21-10. Very uneven but that’s usually what happens when these teams play.

2:44-Quinton Coples sacks Brady and forces another fumble but Brady recovered it. He’s not so lucky on the next play as he throws a bad pick-6 to Allen (23-yard return). And the Jets are right back in it down 21-17.

2:53-Marcus Forston tackles Ivory for a 3-yard loss.

2:54-One of the great mysteries surrounding the Patriots (and there are many) is how Steve Gregory is in the NFL, let alone starting in New England. I say this as he gets called for an easy pass interference when he never turned around vs. Cumberland.

2:55-Chandler Jones gets his second sack and forces a fumble that D’Brickashaw Ferguson recovers.

2:56-Chris Jones picks up his second sack, Smith fumbled but recovered it. Four combined sacks for the Joneses.

2:59-This is getting ridiculous, something called Damon Harrison sacked Brady for a 7-yard loss.

3:02-27-yard catch by Nelson, Jets got all the momentum now on both sides of the ball.

3:05-Wow, Devin McCourty knocks out a sure touchdown catch by Cumberland in the end zone.

3:06-Smith runs for 14-yards and a first down, he ran over poor Marquice Cole at the end of it to extend past the line.

3:08-Absolutely pathetic effort by the Pats defense, all the injuries have finally caught up with them. Smith ran for an 8-yard touchdown, once again Cole was burned badly. Jets take their first lead of the game, 24-21.

3:12-Muhammad Wilkerson picks up the Jets’ fourth sack of the game, what’s the excuse for the Patriots offensive line? I know New York’s defensive line is formidable but come on.

3:13-Third straight 3-and-out for the Patriots offense, this has unraveled quickly.

3:14-17-yard run by Ivory, everything is going the Jets way at the moment.

3:17-37-yard field goal by Folk makes it 27-21 Jets. Pats need a good drive and they need it now.

3:20-12-yard run by Ridley, where has that been all day?

3:22-12-yard catch and run by Edelman, he’s been MIA for most of today except for punt returns. They need him to step up since Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson haven’t done anything.

3:24-Third quarter ends with New York up 27-21 but at least New England is moving the ball on this drive.

3:27-14-yard catch by Dobson, he must have been reading this.

3:28-Matching penalties negate a long catch by Bolden down to the goal-line, it figures because that was a pretty play. Those aren’t allowed when the Patriots play the Jets.

3:31-Who would have thought Gronkowski and Brady wouldn’t have the best chemistry right off the bat? 39-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski cuts it to 27-24.

3:35-Weak personal foul call on Chandler Jones, who pushed Ivory after he had been tackled. Dumb move by Jones but the shove had nothing behind it.

3:36-The Patriots are creating a personal highlight reel for Kerley: career-high 7 catches for 86 yards and counting.

3:37-Hightower might be a good player but if Cumberland keeps catching passes against him, is there any NFL tight end that he can contain?

3:38-Stephen Hill’s touchdown is wiped out since he pushed McCourty out of the way before he caught it in the end zone. The Jets could give the Raiders a run at the title of most undisciplined team in the NFL.

3:41-Big stop by the Patriots defense (not something you’ve said much today) to force a punt and get the ball back.

3:45-11-yard catch by Gronk on 3rd and 5, that makes me feel better since he’s looked shaky in the second half.

3:47-Another rough day for Brady, Gronk apparently was wide open (CBS never showed it) but Calvin Pace dropped an easy interception and possible pick-6.

3:48-Brady misses on a deep ball intended for Dobson. They are forced to punt, time is running out on New England. Somebody needs to make a play for them or else they’re going down to a very average team.

3:52-3rd and 6 but Kerley makes a 10-yard catch, perfect throw by Smith as he put it only where Kerley could get it.

3:54-Jets are running it down New England’s throats, 5-yard run up the middle by Ivory on 3rd and 1. Will the Patriots get the ball back?

3:55-Excellent pass deflection by Dennard, best part for the Patriots is that it stops the clock too.

3:56-Cumberland drops a 3rd down catch so New England gets the ball back after a good punt at its own 8. There is 2:10 left in the fourth quarter but they do have all three timeouts left. Can Brady rally them at the end for the second week in a row when the offense has struggled all game?

4:00-9-yard run by Bolden is a good start and now the two-minute warning. Where are you Thompkins?

4:03-11-yard catch by Gronk for a first down and he was able to get out of bounds to stop the clock.

4:04-22-yard catch by Gronk, Robert Kraft is shown in the owner’s box saying “why doesn’t he take a timeout?” Relax Bob.

4:05-19-yard catch by Edelman gets them into field goal range.

4:08-44-yard field goal by Gostkowski with 16 seconds ties it at 27.

4:10-For the first time this season, the Pats are going to overtime. What is it about the Jets? They pretty much always play New England tight.

4:16-Gronk goes over 100 yards receiving with a 16-yard catch (his career-high 8th of the game).

4:19-Jets force a punt and Ryan Allen slams it into the end zone yet again.

4:20-12-yard catch by Nelson, I remember that the Patriots worked him out at some point in the summer or during the season after he was released by the Bills.

4:23-Ivory is up to 102 rushing yards today, who predicted that?

4:26-Ivory gets tackled for a 2-yard loss.

4:27-Folk takes a 55-yard field goal, misses it but Chris Jones gets called for an obscure penalty (pushing his own player upfield). Ouch, Dan Dierdorf claims to have never seen that call.

4:31-Folk wins it on a 42-yard field goal. Oh my, we’re going to be hearing way too much about that for the next week. Pats had won six straight against the Jets and 12 in a row vs. AFC East opponents.
