Trade day: Danny Ainge will choose to stay the course or blow things up

Today could ultimately be quiet, but that’s typically not the way things work at the NBA trade deadline.

After the early week dead air, things ramped up Wednesday as New York Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni resigned and the Dwight Howard trade rumors became scorching hot.

ESPN reported that D’Antoni’s departure had to do with “conflicting views of the Knicks’ future” and that it was a “mutual decision.”

New York had lost six games in a row prior to yesterday, as “Lin-sanity” came to a screeching halt.

As for Howard, league sources told ESPN that the Magic center’s sudden request to stay in Orlando actually angered team management. The report said that the Magic were “closer than ever” to trading the star big man.

The Celtics will certainly be in the market for a big body as they announced yesterday that forward Chris Wilcox will miss the remainder of the 2011-12 season. Wilcox will undergo aortic surgery later this month to repair an aortic abnormality.
