UFC getting bigger, smaller

For once, one of Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White’s “major announcements” actually turned out to be major.

White made it public Thursday that the UFC is absorbing World Extreme Cagefighting, the secondary brand that fights largely at lower weight classes.

Starting Jan. 1, UFC cards will feature bantamweight?(135-pound) and featherweight (145) divisions.

Either current WEC lightweight (155) champ Ben Henderson or Anthony Pettis will face Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard for a unified UFC lightweight championship sometime next year.

WEC cards have long been televised free on cable.
