United States women’s soccer team downs Australia, 3-1, in World Cup

The United States women’s soccer team, specifically midfielder Megan Rapinoe, took care of business Monday night in their 2015 World Cup opener, defeating Australia, 3-1, at Winnipeg Stadium.

Rapinoe scored two goals, the American’s first – in the 12th minute of play – and their third – in the 78thminute of play.Christen Press scored the sandwich goal for the U.S. off a perfect feed from Sydney Leroux.

Press’ goal broke a 1-1 tie as Australia made the Americans work early on. Lisa De Vannacapitalized off some fine work inside the box to beat Hope Solo.Overall,Solo was strong however – makingseveral spectacular saves, particularly early. Australia had 10 shots on goal.

Alex Morgan saw action late off the bench.

The U.S. is now unbeaten in itslast 10 international games.

The U.S. is back in actionin Group D play Friday, when it will take on Sweden (8 p.m., FOX).
