Chase Utley went 3-for-4 as the Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs, 9-8, Tuesday night to snap a five-game losing streak.
Darin Ruf, who has reached base safely in 33 straight games, hit a home run and a double in his first start in right field this season. Carlos Ruiz added his third home run of the season.
The Phillies' bullpen, with the exception of much-maligned closer Jonathan Papelbon, was able to get the job done for starter Kyle Kendrick, who was lifted in favor of a pinch hitter with a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Phils (51-61) would tack on one more run before the relievers took over in the seventh.
Jake Diekman and Justin De Fratus combined to pitch two scoreless innings.
Papelbon gave up three runs in the ninth, although he probably should've escaped with just two runs, as left fielder Domonic Brown dropped a fly ball that would have been the third and final out, allowing a run to score.
Utley had two RBIs and two runs scored on two singles and a triple.
Kendrick improved to 10-8 on the season.
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo hit his 18th home run of the season. Right fielder Nate Schierholtz, who played briefly for the Phillies in 2012, went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Cubs (49-63).
