Werth, Nationals get best of Phils

Jayson Werth and the Nats took a 7-4 win over the Phillies.

For the past few days, Jayson Werth has talked about wanting to change the culture of the Nationals’ organization. It’s a franchise that hasn’t had a winning season since being resurrected in 2005.

Well, in his first game against his former team, Werth led by example. The right fielder went 2-for-3 and belted a fifth-inning homer off Joe Blanton in a 7-4 win over the Phillies.

“I finally got to see Charlie [Manuel] just in passing. It was good to see Charlie,” Werth said before last night’s game started. “I’ve been through a lot with Charlie.”

Blanton (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings. Ryan Howard paced the offense with a solo shot in the third and later scored on a wild pitch. Raul Ibanez and Placido Polanco also plated runs.
