Will Ricky Gervais be Golden yet again?

When comedian Ricky Gervais signed on to host the 2010 Golden Globes, he said he would absolutely only host the show once. But with an 18 percent increase in the ratings that year, 2011 finds him back in the role of Globes host again. What gives?

“I wasn’t going to do it again but then I thought, I could improve,” Gervais explains, almost anticipating a razzing. “That’s what I really thought.”

“I like the jeopardy,” he continues. “It’s live and there’s, you know, a quarter of a billion people watching and a room full of some of the most powerful people in the world. That’s my extreme sport. That’s what gives me an adrenaline rush — thinking it could be the end of my career.”

He may be predicting a sad fate, but the creator of “The Office” isn’t shy about his own success, noting that he only can truly take pride in projects that are of his own making — not award shows. That’s why he’s saying he won’t host the Globes after this last time … again.

“I’m not a presenter. I don’t think I should be doing it at all,” he confesses modestly. “But I suppose I want this to be great and go out on a high. If I’m bad, I shouldn’t do it again and if I’m good, I shouldn’t do it again. That’s the thinking, really.”

It might be hard to believe him this time around, but its possible that his own real worry that he’ll screw up is what keeps him hedging his bets.

“There is a constant fight in my head with what will go down well and what won’t,” he says of his sometimes-controversial comedy. “If people know where you’re coming from and what the target really is, you can get away with murder … cue O.J. Simpson joke.”
