Yankees prospect watch: Jorge Mateo suspended for complaining, Gary Sanchez is hot

What’s the future look like for the Yankees?

The club’s top prospects have been up and down in their various levels of minor-league play. Some have also made off the field headlines, like top prospect Jorge Mateo.

Here’s a brief check in with the five top prospects in New York’s system and how they are currently playing (or not playing, whatever the case may be):

Jorge Mateo, Single-A Tampa: According to various sources, the Yanks’top prospect mouthed off to team brass about not being promoted to Double-A and two-week suspension was smacked on him Wednesday. He will not play in next week’s Future’s Game in San Diego and will also miss a bevy of games with his Single-A club. The 21-year-old is hitting .266 on the year but just .211 in his last 10 games — making the Yankees’ point that perhaps he isn’t ready for a call up. In 76 games, the shortstop has 26 stolen bases and 34 RBI as well as 22 extra base hits.

Aaron Judge, Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre: Judge is looking more and more major league ready every day, though his 85 strikeouts in 81 games are a bit of a red flag. The 24-year-old outfielder has an impressive 40 walks and an even more impressive 54 RBI and 16 homers through the first half of his minor league season.

Gary Sanchez,Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre: Perhaps the Yankees big league catcher of the future, Sanchez is 23 and starting to come on in Triple-A. He’s hitting .319 over his last 10 games and has hit safely in nine of those 10. He had a brief call up — for one game — earlier this season and will likely make a return trip to the Bronx at some point this year.

Wilkerman Garcia, Rookie ball: At 18-years-old, Garcia is tough to really judge as far as his production goes. An international signee from a year ago, Garcia cost the Yankees $1.35 million and has a lot of potential at shortstop. Hailing from Venezuela, Garcia is adjusting to professional baseball hitting at just a .214 clip thus far for the Pulaski Yankees.

Dustin Fowler, Double-A Trenton: The 21-year-old outfield prospect has been fairly productive in Double-A this season and has played well of late, hitting .293 over his last 10 games. Fowler has shown steady improvement each season in the minors, from batting .241 in 2013, .257 in 2014 and .298 last season.
